Renovating an old house is so different than renovating a new house. I swear, every time we make a plan the house laughs at us just a little bit.

Even though there are surprises around every corner, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Our house is so full of charm and I love that our family gets to make memories in it just like all the generations before.

Join us as we fix up our 300 year old home, one room at a time, all while raising three kids, a bunch of pigs, and trying 🤞 to stay married in the process (Reno’s can be hard on a marriage 😳😉)

What an adventure! This week I started installing

What an adventure! This week I started installing my stair runner in my front staircase.

Not pictured, but around the corner of the fireplace is a black staircase. As I started installing my runner, I came into a lot of issues and now I am throwing in the towel on that design and starting from scratch.

It might seem crazy to start over, but I know myself enough to know that this issue will drive me crazy if I move forward not addressing it.

So it’s totally worth throwing in the towel and going in a completely different direction.

I have to remind myself that in this DIY industry we’re not professionals… We’re just figuring it out as we go and sharing our journey.

So today I’m giving myself a little grace AND pumping myself up for phase 2 which is back to the design board!

This rug is still pretty new in my dining room and I am still in love!

I have a very similar runner that I’m installing this week on the staircase that’s visible from this room.

The only downside is that it’s just too wide for the stairs and it didn’t have any smaller widths so I’m giving carpet binding a shot this week.

I know there’s some products out there where the carpet binding and the tape are attached, but my fear is that the binding won’t match the rug perfectly.

So instead, I’m going to take the difficult road and cut off the existing binding and reattach it with carpet tape.

I’ve watched several YouTube videos and I’m so excited to give it a try.

DIY library nook. In one weekend we turned this very unused corner of our landing into an awesome library nook!

We started with building a built in bookcase to store all our books.

The tricky part with built ins in old homes is that nothing is ever square because everything is crooked lol. Houses settle over time.

We ran into a little trouble with crown moulding. So we opted to keep it off.

Next, we added lights to make the space a bit cozier. First we added a picture light in the middle of the bookcase and second a drop lamp in the corner by the chair.

Then we added a rug for color and texture. Also, rugs are a great way to define an area.

Lastly, we added a cozy reading chair and ottoman!

Entryway/stairwell remodel. 😬It’s been one year since we started renovating our entryway. We did not anticipate this project taking this long.

🏡 But, when it comes to renovating old houses… There seems to be a problem around every corner. So, we should have known.

😊We’re beyond thrilled with how it turned out. It’s literally like night and day difference.

💡The goal was to add as much light as we possibly could. It literally looked like a dungeon before.

🚪We started by replacing the door which added so much more light.

🪚Then we cut down half of the wall exposing the stairwell. Which also allowed for more light to come in.

🖌We painted just about everything white so the light would reflect off of it, but wanted to add contrast so we ended up painting the staircase black.

🎨To break up all of that solid color we added a patterned runner.

💡And to top it off we went with a very traditional farmhouse chandelier.
